  • Two arrested for stealing copper in Holden Beach

    Holden Beach Police officers have arrested two men for larceny of copper.

    •Olin Chad Ivey, 23, of 1620 Olin Drive SW in Supply, was charged with larceny of copper, conspiracy to commit larceny, possession of stolen goods and damage to personal property on March 13. In February, Ivey was charged with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, obtaining property by false pretences, conspiracy to commit breaking and entering and possession/concealing stolen property.

  • Sunset Beach crime report

    Sunset Beach police investigated a breaking and entering reported March 14 on Waterway Drive.

    Sometime between November and March 14, someone kicked in a rear door and drank a bottle of liquor, the only item reported taken at the vacation home.

    Police also arrested Calvin Roy Mendenhall III, 19, of Weaverville, for DWI and reckless driving. His vehicle crashed into a pole on Lakeshore Drive.

  • Standoff in Shallotte Point ends without serious injuries

    SHALLOTTE POINT—A nearly two-hour standoff Monday ended with a Shallotte Point man being taken to the hospital, but left no one seriously injured.

    Around 4 p.m. Monday, Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call that a man had barricaded himself inside his Shallotte Point home and was threatening to catch the home on fire while still inside.

    Patrick Tedder, 46, barricaded himself inside his Kay Street home Monday until the sheriff’s office SWAT team was able to subdue him and remove him from the home, Sheriff Ronald Hewett said.

  • Shallotte police raid alleged video gambling site

    Shallotte Police served a warrant on a computer/Internet store on Holden Beach Road suspected of possessing video gambling machines last week, seizing nearly $5,000 and ordering the manager to appear in court.

    Police issued a search warrant at Shallotte Business Center on Tuesday, March 4, after receiving anonymous tips from the public that it might be a site of illegal gambling. They seized $4,924 in cash and issued a citation to appear in court to manager Patricia Mary Westerman of Carolina Shores.

    Copper wire stolen from Holden Beach home

    Holden Beach Police officers are investigating a larceny from a rental home on Ocean Boulevard. On March 7, an unknown suspect stole 18 feet of copper tubing and 18 feet of copper thermostat wire from the home. The investigation is ongoing.


    Ocean Isle Beach Police officers investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from patrol activity reports.

    •Lauren Nichole Abernathy, 21, of Fayetteville, was charged with driving while intoxicated and driving left of center.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents last week, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Breaking and entering on Mount Misery Road in Leland; suspect broke into victim’s shed and took a fishing rod and reel.

    •Arson to vehicle on Lakeside Avenue in Supply; victim’s vehicle was found completely burned.

    •Breaking and entering and property damage on River Road in Winnabow; suspect went into victim’s garage and drove golf carts around, damaging one golf cart.

  • Sunset Beach crime report

    Police have recovered most of an estimated $37,300 worth of jewelry stolen last month from a local residence.

    A gold and diamond necklace valued at $15,000 is the only item still missing, Sunset Beach deputy police chief Steve Smith said Monday.

    A suspect told police the necklace was sold to an area pawn shop following the felony larceny reported Feb. 22 at a home on West Shoreline Drive.

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit have arrested four suspects for heroin possession stemming from a traffic stop last Thursday. The suspects and their charges, which are taken directly from arrest reports, are:

    •Mario Andre Wright, 32, of 1909 Martin Luther King Drive, Elizabethtown; charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

    •Richard David Johnson, 19, of 2822 Midway Road, Bolivia; charged with possession ounces or less of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
